Since the industrial revolution, technology has consistently reshaped the workforce but educational systems often struggle to keep pace. Today, with the increasing speed of automation technologies integration, educational systems can no longer lag behind. A recent McKinsey & Company report highlighted automation enabled by technologies as the most disruptive factor to having a well-trained future workforce. High-skilled careers like those developed through the NSF ATE programs will be impacted the most. Now more than ever, it is imperative that focus is placed on staying ahead of the curve in technician training programs across the nation.
RCNET will host a two-day workshop designed to bring together a critical mass of academic, technology, and government experts with a mission of embedding automation enabling technologies, such as robotics, artificial intelligence, and batteries, into STEM college programs to address immediate and future (5 years) workforce needs.
Hosted on IRSC’s main campus in Ft. Pierce, FL, workshop participants will review best practices in automation technologies across the eight ATE meta-fields, identify curriculum, technology and training gaps, and develop a roadmap to close the gaps. This workshop will also welcome industry, government, and university leaders in automation technologies.
The workshop will result in a white paper detailing the state of automation technologies in the technician training programs and will include:
1. A summary of the current best practices across all ATE fields
2. Opportunities to integrate interdisciplinary training
3. Identified funding opportunities
4. A completed gap analysis
5. Identified pathways for curriculum, technology, and training gaps
